NLP & Six Sigma for a Poised Spirit!

In today's scenario, each of us have various perspectives of life and try to manage ourselves in different situations from lessons learnt by experiences, suggestions from kith & kin, rational thought, etc. This article is about having a balanced life by changing our modus vivendi by the application of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) & Six Sigma.

I opine - Neuro is the mind’s dynamics; Linguistic is the use of words in language, sounds, symbols, gestures etc and Programming is setting a behaviour based on the various stimuli one gets from the environment. Neuro Linguistic Programming is a programme that could be run in your unconscious mind to bring those consequences that you would want to see. A switch used to tune in your desired states in the mind’s radio and see what you expect in your television of the world. A formula to analyze the behaviour, interpret the languages and generate excellence. NLP is being aware of your behaviours and that of others and thereby calibrating them for the purpose of understanding and the ability to relate to those behaviours in a more realistic way without distortion.

Defining Six Sigma, it is the standard deviation from the expected output and it measures the spread of data. A lower variability indicates meeting customer requirements or fewer defects. Thus, Six Sigma refers to 3.4 defects per million opportunities.
Well if the above sounds ambiguous or lacks clarity, I believe that you’ll get a better understanding as you read this article.

In our routine, we have to take decisions and time management is very important to accomplish the tasks (both personal & professional). Most of us might plan but planning becomes very crucial as it can save a lot of time while implementing desired actions. Taking decisions and making it a win-win situation is as important as feeling satisfied, perhaps delighted and making others feel the same too.

Let me illustrate the application of NLP & Six Sigma with few illustrations.

1. Given 10 tasks to do along with deadline. How to prioritize and perform?

First you must understand your roles and responsibilities related to the task and your accountability, thereby trying to evaluate the business impact related.
Segregate the tasks as independent (which you can do it alone) and dependent (you might require someone to do it for you or someone to help/guide you) tasks.

After having the tasks categorized as independent and dependent, try to prioritize in the order as follows: Important & urgent, not so important but urgent, important but not urgent, not important and not urgent.

After this is done, put a time frame containing Start/End Time and Date; make sure you take deadlines into consideration.

Always ensure that after every completion of the task you send a formal report to your senior official and track them wisely giving no chances to complain! It is also ideal to track the tasks assigned with the Date and mark the status after completion with date and send to the concerned person.

Above all, the prescripts are to be maintained – quality, no defects/ rework, complying with standards and above all, Deadlines are to be met!

2. Decision to be taken with minimum information over a relationship.

It’s better to use filter for only healthy deletion, distortion and generalization, thereby able to take accurate decisions and narrow down on best possible solution to the challenges and information you get.

In most of the situations where we need to take a personal decision on a relationship, we are often over-accentuated by others’ perspectives than our own! At this juncture, it is wise to avoid all deletions (for instance: trying to ignore some facts assuming it’s irrelevant), Distortions (for instance: hearing or seeing things from distance and information procured from indirect sources), and Generalization (for instance: just because he/she has done something, he/she is bad/ good). Many times, one of the actions of the other person could have caused a negative impact but we need to understand that “No one is bad; except for the not so good element that some may have for a temporary time limit!”
It is advisable to observe the frequency of occurrence and address the situation respectively.

So when taking decisions, you may choose to use the Perceptual Position exercise that I learnt from NLP. You have to live as three different people in 3 different positions: Self, Other, Observer in order to understand and evaluate a given situation. This can be done by experiencing how a given scenario impacts you personally from the “Self” position, how the scenario makes the other person involved feel from the “Other” position and finally imagine yourself as a stranger to analyze the same situation from the “Observer” position. Now, merge the opinions and try to evaluate your current situation and take a holistic decision not just for you!

If you're wondering where's Six Sigma here.. It's the quality and our performance that takes to do the above without any failure when accomplishing the process sans wastage of time!
